Living the high life on a low life budget?

How do you do that? Very simply, change your mind set. Paradigm Shift so to speak. Talk to yourself out loud and ask: Do I really need that? OR is it … that I just really want it. Why do we feel so entitled to get what we want, right when we want it? When, in fact, if you wait just a day, maybe two, you’d find that you’d forget “it” ever existed … If you don’t forget, then you “get.”

So here you are trying to create a “home” out of your house and you live in Fairfield County … on a shoe-string budget … What to do, what to do. Everything seems so expensive, and your friends with unlimited budgets are everywhere. Yes, you live in Fairfield County, this is what happens. Well, if this bothers you then get busy. Start researching websites for great deals, but before even the research search begins, set a budget. This is critical. SmartBargains.com and Overstock.com have amazing deals all the time on basically everything. Furniture, rugs, linens etc… Compare those deals to what you find on Amazon.com. Another, great tip is to ask for a better deal. When it comes to buying tile or fixtures etc., ask the salesperson “Is that the best you can do?…” Make it your standard catch-phase. You may be surprised. Salespeople want to sell as much as you want to buy.

Another idea, transform yourself into a “do-it”-yourselfer. Pick up the paint brush, the shovel, the hammer. Whatever tool you deem necessary to achieve the desired effect you want … Start your project on a very small scale to see if you like what the task entails. If you do then that is a huge bonus. If not, shelve it, or ask a handy friend (Yes, even the ones with endless bank accounts are talented!) This month’s LHJ (Ladies’ Home Journal) has a great article on how to be happier, called “Want to be Happier?” Interestingly enough, it tells you to become more manual. Use your hands. Pot your own plants, sew your own clothes (or at least repair them – I can’t sew either!) These kinds of tasks actually decrease your stress levels. No arguing … it’s scientific! Now, I’m off to bake my own bread, chop my own wood, and mow my own lawn … I aim to be REALLY happy!
