Craft the Perfect Porch Sanctuary!
Do you dream of reposing on your porch with a book, a drink and your dog (or cat) at your feet? It’s the perfect fantasy … especially for those of us who are so scheduled, that sitting for 5 minutes (in a row – not collectively!) is sometimes an unattainable goal. Maybe we need a little push, a tranquil setting that speaks to us from across the house. You can create it yourself, with very little effort. This room can be removed, resurrected and redesigned season after season. It all begins with a term that has become wildly popular in the design industry … “weather-resistant.” These fabrics and furnishings create a feeling of hominess, even in your great outdoors.
Combine these wonderful textiles with re-purposed items hanging around your garage. Just look around with a different set of eyes. That planter or wheelbarrow you’re not using could make an awesome side table or coffee table. Just flip them over, or place a piece of plywood on top to make a level surface. Take things and turn them sideways and backwards – you never know what new and interesting use you’ll discover. Christmas lights can morph into “twinkle lights.” Three old benches, and a mattress wrapped in a washable cover can become a daybed. Stitch together lovely drapes for a bit of shade and privacy out of shower curtains or Sunbrella fabrics. They even make waterproof standing lamps that give a nod to Mother Nature. Throw pillows, also made with weather resistant fabrics, add a touch of color and comfort. Floor covers made out of recycled materials cover the porch without growing moldy (check out vivaterra.com.)
Don’t forget the piece de resistance for all outdoor spaces – plants and flowers. Hydrangea’s and Begonias potted in great terracotta or bold ceramic pots bring life to a dull corner. Don’t forget about your weather deprived indoor plants either … they’d probably enjoy a breath of fresh air too. These will be the cherry on the top of a very delectable daydream … Sleep Tight!
